Insight Settings

Each insight visualization has specific settings for configuration. In addition to the Insight Settings, the insight visualization also affects the available properties for columns and formulas added to related trays (Pill’s Property Menu).

For a given Insight, select Settings (gear icon) in the action bar.

The Settings menu will have a Settings tab and a Layout tab (depending on the visualization).

Insight Settings Tab

Here are some common Settings properties:

  • Page Size: Determines number of rows per page.
  • Max Groups: Use this to return a large table when there is a group-by of 500,000 values or more.
  • Max Rows: Limits the number of rows of data from the grouping dimension to be included in the Insight
  • Auto Refresh: Refreshes Dashboard automatically.

    • Enabled by default. Leave it on if you want the Insight to update automatically whenever the underlying data is updated.
    • Disable if you want the Insight to update only when a new session is started.
  • Logarithmic: Enable this to focus on where data points start fluctuating. For example, if all the horizontal data points on the chart share the same vertical values up to a certain point, you want to start the vertical dimension at this point to increase the scale and focus on the fluctuating data. Enabling Logarithmic does this automatically.
  • Join Measures: Calculating the group-by function across joined tables is a very complex operation impacting the engine’s performance, and thus disabled by default. Using Join Measures enables this calculation.

Properties for Measures and Dimensions

Page Size Property Setting

The Page Size settings property determines the number of rows per page in any of the following table insights:

  • Pivot Table
  • Table
  • Aggregated
  • Aggregated - Total
  • Aggregated - Subtotal
  • Aggregated - Subtotal - Total

To change the page size property setting value:

  1. Select the Settings menu (gear icon) in the action bar.
  2. For Page Size, select the number of rows by entering a value or using the up and down arrows.

    • Default setting is 1000 rows.
    • Minimum value is 1.
    • A zero (0) value will default to 1000.
  3. Select Done in the action bar to save your selection.

The number of pages appears in the bottom left-hand corner of the Insight.

Dynamic Group-By Property Setting

The Dynamic Group-By settings property applies to these insight visualizations:

  • Aggregated
  • Aggregated - Total
  • Aggregated - Subtotal
  • Aggregated - Subtotal - Total

When enabled, the Dynamic Group-By property setting allows dashboard users to select a grouping dimension from the insight action menu. See Design Insights for instructions on this.

Measure Properties

Dimensions that are defined as Measures in the table definition are labeled by dark blue circles. After placing a dimension in the measure field, select the down caret (⌵) to set the corresponding filter parameters.

The Properties Menu for a measure contains four tabs:

  • Data
  • Format
  • Drill Down
  • Advanced

Each tab contains specific properties for configuration. Measure properties will differ for each visualization type.

Here are some common Properties for measures.

Data Settings - Measures

  • Name: Override the default value for the column. Specify a display name for the measure filter.
  • URL: Specify a link to an external URL
  • Aggregation: Select the type of aggregation.
  • Scale: Set the scale of the x-axis to Thousands(K), Millions(M), or Percent(%). If you set the scale to None, the x-axis will scale automatically.
  • Running Total: When enabled, data will be displayed cumulatively along the y-axis.
  • Filter-in-Filter: Use this setting to add a filter to a measure only, without affecting the rest of the Insight. Choose a column, operator, and value for this filter.

Format Tab - Measures

  • Format: Use this setting to define how you want numbers to be displayed in the Insight. Use it to change the color of the line in a time series, or of the columns in a column chart, for instance.

    • Affects the primary color used to visualize data in the Insight.
    • In a line graph with multiple data series represented, this setting affects only the highest or lowest line on the x-axis, depending on the sort order.
    • In a grouped row or column chart, the color set here will be applied to either the first or last row or column in each group.
  • Conditional Formatting: Highlights values that meet a preset condition (constant or variable) with color coding.

    • Tables and KPIs support conditional formatting for measures. Choose an operator and a value for each condition.
    • For tables, you can specify both background and text colors.
    • For KPIs, you can specify text color.

Drill Down Tab - Measures

Dashboard: Specifies the drill down dashboard and optionally enable runtime filters.

Advanced tab - Measures

Enable base field: Specifies a base table to help Incorta find a join path between tables.

Dimension and Coloring Properties

The Properties Menu for a Grouping dimension contains two tabs:

  • Data
  • Drill Down

    • Dashboard: Specifies the drill down dashboard and optionally enable runtime filters

The Properties Menu for a Coloring dimension contains two tabs:

  • Data

    • Name: Override the default value for the column
    • Sort by: Drag and drop a column and specify the order
  • Format

    • Format: Select a color

Specify Filters- Grouping and Coloring Dimensions

When you specify filters for the grouping or coloring dimension in a single Insight:

  • Their order from left to right determines the drill-down path for the Insight.
  • If there are multiple filters in a single insight in either the coloring or grouping dimension, the grouping dimension determines the drill-down path.

    • If you use multiple filters in the grouping dimension, use no more than one filter for the coloring dimension.
    • If you use multiple filters for the coloring dimension in a single Insight, define only one filter for the grouping dimension.
  • When you define filters for the color dimension:

    • The visualization type determines how the color is applied. In a line graph, for instance, the data series for a color dimension would be split into multiple colored lines.
    • The categories are sorted alphanumerically unless you define a sort order.

Layout Settings

Here are some common Layout properties:

Rotation: Select the labels orientation on the horizontal axis of the Insight. Legend: Switch on to display what dimensions the chart colors represent. Values: Switch on to display the values on the charts. Transpose: Show columns as rows.

All Table insight visualizations support Layout settings.

Data Fields and Gauges do not support Layout settings.

Most Chart insight visualizations support Layout settings except for:

  • Bubble
  • Map Bubble
  • Tag Cloud

Layout Settings serve as the default settings for the insight visualization. Dashboard users can modify some Layout Settings when using Maximized View. For a given insight, a dashboard user can enable Maximized View.

Maximized View allows a user to view each insight on a dashboard individually. When applicable, a dashboard user can modify the visualization style, and in turn, configure Layout settings directly.

A user can reset their setting to use the default configuration.

Layout Settings for a Column Chart

  • Rotation: Select the labels orientation on the horizontal axis of the Insight.
  • Legend: Switch on to display what dimensions the chart colors represent.
  • Values: Switch on to display the values on the charts.
  • X-Axis Labels: Switch on to display labels on the x-axis.
  • X-Axis Title: Switch on to display the title of the x-axis.
  • Y-Axis Labels: Switch on to display labels on the y-axis.
  • Y-Axis Title: Switch on to display the title of the y-axis.
  • Y-Axis Min: Provide the minimum value of the displayed y-axis value.
  • Y-Axis Max: Provide the maximum value of the displayed y-axis value.
